Cuối tuần đi đâu? EP2: Discovering Saigon Duc Ba Cathedral – A symbol over 140 years old

If you are wondering where to go in Saigon this weekend to relax and have more meaningful experiences, Notre Dame Cathedral is definitely a destination not to be missed. Located right in the heart of District 1, this 140-year-old architectural work is not only a sacred place but also a symbol associated with the history, culture and soul of the people of Saigon.

1. Journey to discover the history and architecture of Notre Dame Cathedral

Begun in 1877 and completed in 1880, Notre Dame Cathedral in Saigon is a masterpiece designed by architect J. Bourard. All construction materials – from red bricks, cement to stained glass – were imported directly from France, demonstrating the sophistication and intricacy of 19th-century European architecture.

The most special feature is the Marseille red brick: after more than a century, the color remains the same, without needing to be painted. The two bell towers, nearly 60m high, rise up into the sky of the city, becoming a familiar image in the hearts of Saigon people.

Inside, the brilliant stained glass windows, soaring domes and Gothic motifs create a solemn and splendid beauty. In front of the church, the white marble statue of Our Lady of Peace (erected in 1959) still stands there, as a prayer for the peace of the city.

2. Why should parents take their children to Notre Dame Cathedral?

  • Discovering vivid history: No longer dry lines in books, children will be able to “touch” history with their own eyes and real emotions. When standing directly in front of a building that is more than 140 years old, children will see that the past is not far away, but still exists in today’s life.
  • Arousing curiosity and a desire to learn: Unique architecture, stories about origins, building materials or religious meanings are all attractive topics for children to learn more about. From small questions, parents can guide their children to expand their knowledge and practice critical thinking.
  • A space to listen and understand: In a peaceful setting, parents can easily open their mouths, and children also have the opportunity to share many secrets. Sometimes just a session sitting on a stone bench in front of the Cathedral can become a bridge to help parents and children understand each other better.

3. What can you experience at Notre Dame Cathedral?

Bringing your children to Notre Dame Cathedral, parents will be surprised to see that this place is not just an architectural work, but also opens up many interesting experiences for teenagers:

  • Trải nghiệm “học ngoài lớp học”: Con có thể tận mắt quan sát lối kiến trúc Roman – Gothic, tìm hiểu vì sao gạch đỏ Marseille vẫn giữ màu suốt 140 năm, hay khám phá ý nghĩa của các ô cửa kính màu. Đây là “bài học lịch sử – nghệ thuật sống động” mà không sách vở nào truyền tải hết được.

  • Experience “learning outside the classroom”: Children can observe Roman-Gothic architecture with their own eyes, learn why Marseille red bricks have kept their color for 140 years, or discover the meaning of stained glass windows. This is a “living history-art lesson” that no book can convey.

  • Capture memories with photos and vlogs: Notre Dame Cathedral is an extremely beautiful virtual background. Parents can encourage their children to create their own photos and videos to preserve the trip – both fun and stimulating creativity.

  • Sidewalk coffee – a very “Saigon” culture: Sitting on the grass opposite the church, sipping a cup of coffee, watching people passing by is an extremely interesting experience. This is also an opportunity for parents to “immerse” themselves in their children’s youthful world.

Don’t let the weekend pass by with just phones, screens or hasty conversations. A simple walk at Notre Dame Cathedral can become the most beautiful memory of your youth and also a priceless gift that parents give to their own family. Because when you grow up and go further, what remains in your heart is not the material things your parents gave you, but the peaceful, warm moments with your parents today.
